Did you know that conginital heart defects (CHD) are present in 1 in every 100 live births, making it the highest occuring brith defect? This stastic saddens me. Like most people I never even thought this was someting that would effect my life, in fact I had never even heard about CHD. You hear a great deal about neurological, spinal and chromosomal defects while you are pregnant, but never once did anyone even mention the words "conginital heart defect". Until the day I went for a "normal and routine" prenatal ultrasound. This was the day my whole life was turned upside down. This was the day we found out that our son, Grant, would be born with several conginital heart defects. Fortunately for us Grant's defects were diagnosed before he was born.
I am putting this page together for two reasons. First, I want to bring CHD out in the open, I want it to be a topic that doctors discuss with their patients and I want parents to be aware that CHDs occur more frequently than they realize. Second, I want parents and doctors to know that there is hope. CHDs don't have to be fatal, in fact babies with born CHDs can live perfectly normal and happy lives. Grant is proof of that, he has beaten the odds and is now a happy and energetic toddler.
